About wowdetox.com
Lots of people are having problems coping with a gaming addiction to World of Warcraft. They stay glued to their computers often hurting themselves and the people they love. This site aims to provide people with an anonymous outlet for them to express their angst. Hopefully reading through some of the posts will allow some users to find reasons to break the habit.
Not everyone has a problem with the game but those who do need the help.
What is Gaming Addiction?
According to :
"Internet gaming addiction can be defined as a compulsive behavior which interferes with normal living and causes severe stress on family, friends, loved ones, and one's school or work environment. For the gaming addict, the game becomes a compulsive habit that completely dominates the addict's life. Gaming addicts make the Internet a priority more important than family, friends, and work. The game becomes the organizing principle of addicts' lives. They are willing to sacrifice what they cherish most in order to preserve and continue their unhealthy behavior."
Dr. Kimberly Young of the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery.
A very popular figure repeated by sensationalist media outlets states that 40% of gamers are addicts. This number was later refuted by the collegue of the psychologist who was taken out of context. The numbers seem to be more in the 5-10% range and each of these cases vary in intensity.
A concept which is often thrown around by people without a background in psychology is the idea that someone has an addictive personality. My personal opinion on the matter (I am not a mental health professional either) is that there isn't such a thing as an addictive personality. I have taken part in other activities known to cause a problem in some people such as gambling and drinking and none have been unhealthy like WoW has. The game had an effect on me that I was not ready for.
How do I know the game is a problem for me?
Ask friends who don't play the game if they think you are addicted. If you dread the answer they'll give you it is a problem in your life.
Why won't my posts show up?
This site is for people who have a gaming addiction. It isn't a site for people who enjoy a balanced life style that includes World Of Warcraft as one of numerous activities in their life. If a post is meant to berate or belittle those who have a problem it simply will never show up. After all griefer's aren't allowed at AA meetings. I also leave out anything that can get me sued. Note that all posts appear with a delay.
